Lawrence Gowan is inside his hotel room in Arizona where he’s staying cool in the 100-degree weather.

The Styx member is little somber a day after performing in Costa Mesa, California, on July 24, where longtime guitar technician Jimmy Johnson passed away before the show.

Johnson worked for Styx for decades and didn’t show up for the lobby call when hotel management was called.

“By all accounts, he just dropped dead,” he says. “It was a harrowing day. Everyone was determined to do the show. It’s part of the drama of life. To honor what we believe is his expectations, we went on with the show. We received thousands of condolences and continued the epic adventure of Styx.”

It was a tough day for Styx, and Gowan says the band is moving forward with the tour.

Styx is touring in support of its 2017 album “The Mission.”

The band formed in 1972 and rose to fame with albums in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Singles such as “Lady,” “Come Sail Away,” “Babe,” “Show Me the Way” and “Mr. Roboto,” cracked the top 10 and won them millions of fans.

The legendary rock band will perform at show at Legends Theater inside Route 66 Casino on Saturday, Aug. 3.

The album was the first piece of new material for the band in 14 years.

“Among those 14 years between records, there was no time to make a record,” he says. “We play over 100 shows a year, and in the last two years, we’ve scaled it back to about 80 shows. We’ve seen that there’s been a resurgence in classic rock, and people really found ‘The Mission.’ Life presented numerous hurdles along the way. We just had to make the jump and make the best of every situation.”

Gowan has been part of Styx for more than 20 years, and the band is nearing its 50th anniversary.

He’s grateful to be part of a band that has so much history in popular culture.

“Fans have allowed us to continue to this point and touch their lives through our music,” he says. “With decades worth of music, getting the set list right is tough to crack. We were doing very little from ‘The Mission’ at first. Now we’re able to slip in about four or five songs from the album. What’s great is that the sound has evolved a little, but the new songs fit in well with the classic songs.”
